Melamine in surface coatings

Melamine resins are used as clear finishes for paper, fabrics, wood and metals, and can be pigmented to produce opaque enamel finishes. The finishes are colour retentive, water and chemical resistant, and can be formulated for refrigerators, washing machines, automobiles, hospital equipment and kitchen utensils.
The most important application is in formulations used by the auto industry. MF resins are used as cross linkers for high-solid acrylic enamel topcoats. This application enjoyed rapid growth during the 1980s when the auto industries replaced acrylic lacquers with the enamels to reduce solvent emissions and their impact on the environment. This application has matured and MF resins compete now with powder coatings.
