Phthalic anhydride PA

Phthalic anhydride is a chemical compound mainly applied for the production of phthalate esters (dioctyl phthalate, DOP), which are used as plasticisers in PVC, for the production of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), required for fibreglass-reinforced plastics, and for the formulation of alkyd resins (solvent paints). Other applications include dyes, detergents, fire retardants, saccharin and polyester resin cross-linking agents.

Phthalic anhydride is typically made by orthoxylene partial oxydation in catalytic reactors.
