7 October 2026 – In a recent edition of the World Fertilizer Magazine, Guido Canti, Commercial Director at Eurotecnica, examines melamine’s growing importance as an advanced material for safety and insulation engineering across industrial and transportation applications.
One of the most versatile melamine-based materials is melamine resin foam which combines a unique combination of properties that are typically delivered by several different materials. It is exceptionally lightweight, provides effective thermal insulation, withstands long-term temperatures of up to 150°C, and offers inherent flame resistance without the need for additional treatments.
These characteristics help address a longstanding engineering challenge. Thermal insulation, sound absorption, and fire protection have traditionally required separate materials, adding complexity to system design.
As Guido explains, “Melamine-based systems reduce that fragmentation, enabling designers to create lighter, safer, and quieter systems with fewer layers.”
The open-cell foam is particularly well suited to HVAC systems, aircraft cabins, and rolling stock applications, while melamine nonwovens extend these benefits further with thermal stability of up to 240°C.
Melamine’s contribution extends beyond foams and nonwovens. In intumescent coatings, melamine derivatives act as char promoters, helping to form a protective layer that preserves the structural integrity of steel during a fire.
“Melamine-based systems reduce that fragmentation, enabling designers to create lighter, safer and quieter systems with fewer layers.”

The article also highlights several trends that play to melamine’s strengths, including the growing demand for lower-smoke materials and more energy-efficient, integrated thermal-acoustic solutions.
As global demand for high-performance melamine-based materials continues to grow, the industry relies on the production of melamine crystals that meet consistently high-quality standards. Eurotecnica’s Euromel® technology, deployed in plants designed and engineered by the company, has become a benchmark in this field. With a portfolio of 33 melamine plants and cumulative Euromel® production exceeding 10 million tonnes, the technology has demonstrated both its robustness and widespread industry adoption.
